You lead a new(-ish) team?
You want to gain an overview of all the skills your team has (or lacks)?
You want to talk about what activities motivate folks (and which don't)?
Then the Skill-Matrix for Tech-Teams is for you!
Here are three possible goals you can achieve with this activity:
getting an overview of the skills (and gaps) in a team
showing skills gaps, e.g., to management (to discuss about new team members)
co-creating a plan for upskilling and knowledge sharing within the team
All these three things build on each other. On top of that you are prepared e.g. when you have a new team member joining to first offer them an overview of 'who can do what (well)' and 'Who enjoys doing what (the most)?'. Next that new team member can share what they bring to the table to which extent and what they (dis)like to do.
Needless to say that having an up-to-date Skill Matrix co-created with you team enables you to search more precisely for a new team member and even smoothly prepare these hiring interview conversations many folks usually dread to prepare.
My short "how to use it" moderation agenda for one hour looks like this:
[5'] Intro
[10'] Collect skills (or tools) on the yellow sticky notes
[5'] Agree on which yellow sticky notes to keep & which to group
[15'] One-all (Liberating Structures inspired): write down your skill/knowledge levels and your motivation/joy levels (first privately on paper, then put it on the board together)
[15'] Learn from it together and agree on the next steps (e.g., learning tandems, communicating gaps to hire new people, etc.)
